Saturday Devotion to the Blessed Virgin

Since the time of Charlemagne (9th Century) Saturdays in ordinary time are devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today is such a day. Below is a picture of a Chapel which is made in part of the foundations and walls of the home Mary occupied in Ephesus while in the care of St. John.

I like this picture because it helps me to contemplate the great longing both Mary and John must have felt. To be eyewtinesses of the resurrection and ascension of the Lord and then to live so long in his absence - it must have kindled such desire to be with him in his perfect Kingdom. Yet they waited, faithfully, living normal lives in stone houses, cooking food, making clothes, earning a living, and sharing what they knew of eternal things.
